This is a principle of Kant’s “Categorical Imperative,” a cornerstone of his moral philosophy. He argues that one should act in a way that their actions could be applied universally as a rule for everyone. These western thinkers like Kant and René Descartes “I think, therefore I am.”, for me tend to follow down the line of isolation of the human experience in a separate condition from the grand canvas. Our delusion generating brains seek that isolation of experience and run patterns to survive which often are fear based fight or flight in how we operate in the world. It takes effort to push the envelop of perception. Allan Watts once was describing Zen and Taoist thought, “it isn’t ’to be or not to be’ that is the question, it is ‘to be and not to be’”. Only in that removing of the perception of self can I see the grand painting I’m part of.
